How to Calculate Your Exact Age in Years, Months and Days

Subtracting birth year from the current year gives the right age only after the birthday has passed. For forms, eligibility rules and records you often need the exact figure.

The method

  1. Subtract the birth year from the current year.
  2. If this year's birthday hasn't happened yet, subtract 1.
  3. For months and days, count forward from the last birthday to today.

Example: born on 14 August 1990, checked on 20 October 2026. The birthday has passed, so 36 years; from 14 August to 20 October is 2 months and 6 days. Age: 36 years, 2 months, 6 days.

The age calculator does this instantly and also shows total months, weeks and days lived, the weekday you were born on, and a countdown to the next birthday.

Age on a specific date

Change the "Age on" date to see how old someone will be — or was — on a given day. Useful for school entry cut-offs, sports age groups, insurance and job applications that set a maximum or minimum age on a deadline.

Born on 29 February?

In non-leap years the calculator treats 1 March as the birthday for the countdown. Legal rules for leap-day birthdays vary by country, so check locally if it matters for a document.

Other age systems

Some cultures count age differently — for example, the traditional Korean system where everyone is 1 at birth and gains a year on New Year's Day. For anything official, international age (the method above) is what's used almost everywhere. Need just the number of days between two dates? Use Days Between Dates.
