Minguo Years: How to Convert Taiwan's ROC Calendar to Western Years
In Taiwan, official documents, ID cards, receipts and many forms write the year as a Minguo year: 民國115年 for 2026. If you deal with Taiwanese paperwork, this conversion comes up all the time.
The rule
The Minguo calendar counts from 1912, the founding of the Republic of China. Months and days are the same as the Gregorian calendar; only the year number differs.
- Western year = Minguo year + 1911
- Minguo year = Western year − 1911
So 2026 is Minguo 115, 2000 is Minguo 89, and Minguo 80 is 1991.
How dates are written
- Full form: 民國115年10月20日
- Short numeric form on forms and receipts: 115/10/20 or 115.10.20
- Invoices (統一發票) are issued by Minguo year and two-month period, e.g. 115年9–10月.
Watch out when sorting dates in spreadsheets: a three-digit year like 115 won't sort correctly against 2026 — convert first.
Years before 1912
Years before the Republic are written 民國前 ("before the Republic"): 1911 is 民國前1年, 1900 is 民國前12年. There's no year zero.
Converting quickly
The Minguo year converter goes both ways, handles years before 1912, and gives both the full form and the short numeric form used on forms.
Japan uses a similar idea with imperial eras — see the Japanese era converter.
