Adding vs. removing tax
Adding: gross = net × (1 + rate). £100 + 20% VAT = £120.
Removing: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate). The tax inside £120 at 20% is £20, not £24 — a common mistake is to take 20% of the gross amount. A quick rule: at 20%, the VAT in a gross price is one sixth of it.

Frequently asked questions
How do I work out the VAT in a price that already includes it?
Choose "Remove tax", enter the gross price and the rate. The tool shows the tax portion and the net price.
What about US sales tax?
US sales tax is set by states and cities and added at checkout. Choose "Custom rate" and enter your combined local rate.
Why does Canada show only 5%?
That's the federal GST. Provinces add their own sales tax or use a combined HST of 13–15%; enter that as a custom rate.
