Fancy letters for your bio: how they work and when not to use them
Instagram bios, TikTok captions and WhatsApp statuses don't let you choose a font. Yet you see profiles with 𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐝 words, 𝓬𝓾𝓻𝓼𝓲𝓿𝓮 names and Ⓑⓤⓑⓑⓛⓔ letters. The trick is Unicode.
Characters, not formatting
Unicode, the standard that lets every device show the same text, includes complete alphabets meant for mathematics: bold, italic, script, double-struck, fraktur. To a phone, “𝐀” is a different character from “A”, so it survives copy and paste anywhere. The fancy text generator converts your text into 23 of these styles.
Using them well
- Decorate one word or a short title, not whole paragraphs.
- Pair one style with normal text so the post stays readable.
- Preview on another phone: older devices may show some styles as empty boxes.
When not to use them
Screen readers used by blind and low-vision people may read “𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐞” as “mathematical bold capital S, mathematical bold small a…” — or skip it. Search engines and in-app search often don't match them to normal letters either. So never use fancy letters for:
- your name or username, if you want people to find you
- prices, phone numbers, addresses and links
- important information like dates and instructions
Accents and other alphabets
Accented letters keep their accent marks. Letters with no styled version — Japanese, Chinese, Korean — stay as they are. For simple capitalization changes, the case converter is the accessible option.
