What the check covers
- Country code and length: every country has a fixed IBAN length — 22 characters in Germany and the UK, 24 in Spain, 27 in France and Italy.
- Check digits: the two digits after the country code are calculated with the ISO 13616 mod-97 rule. A single wrong or swapped character almost always fails.
- National check digits: for Spain, Belgium and Norway the account number's own check digits are verified too.
What it can't tell you
A valid IBAN only means the number is typed correctly. It doesn't confirm the account exists, is open, or belongs to the person you expect. Invoice fraud often uses perfectly valid IBANs — if a supplier "changes bank details" by email, confirm by phone. In the EU and UK, banks now offer a payee name check before you pay.
Privacy
Bank details never leave your device: the check runs entirely in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find my IBAN?
On your bank statement, in your banking app (usually under account details), or on the bank's website.
Do US banks use IBAN?
No. The US uses routing and account numbers; for international transfers to the US you'll also need a SWIFT/BIC code.
Can I get the BIC from the IBAN?
Not reliably without a bank directory, so this tool doesn't guess it. Ask the recipient for their BIC if your bank needs it.
