Before you use it

Works well for

  • Converting lakh and crore to million and billion
  • Writing numbers in Indian comma format
  • Reading salaries (LPA) and property prices

Not the right tool for

  • Currency conversion — it changes the format, not the currency
  • Writing cheques in words in regional languages

The Indian number system

  • 1 lakh = 1,00,000 = one hundred thousand
  • 10 lakh = 10,00,000 = one million
  • 1 crore = 100 lakh = 1,00,00,000 = ten million
  • 100 crore = 1,00,00,00,000 = one billion

Where the commas go

The Indian system puts a comma after the first three digits from the right, then after every two digits: 12,34,56,789. The international system groups every three digits: 123,456,789. Both are the same number.

Handy for

Reading Indian news, salaries ("12 LPA" = 12 lakh per annum), property prices and company valuations — or explaining an amount to someone used to the other system.
