How much to tip
In US restaurants with table service, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary, with 18–20% common in cities. Many people leave less for counter service. Customs vary a lot by country: in much of Europe a service charge is included or a small round-up is enough.
Tip before or after tax?
Etiquette guides generally recommend tipping on the pre-tax amount. Enter the subtotal as the bill and the tax separately: the tax is added to the total but not to the tip.
Splitting fairly
Tick "round up" to get a whole number per person — handy when paying in cash. The extra from rounding is shown so the group can decide what to do with it.
