Watermark your documents

Before you send a copy of your ID, passport or payslip, stamp it with who it's for and why. A copy that says “for rental application only, 21/10/2026” is useless to anyone who tries to reuse it.

Before you use it

Works well for

  • ID, passport and driver's licence copies
  • Payslips, bank statements and proof of address
  • Photos of documents sent by chat or email

Not the right tool for

  • Documents that must stay digitally signed (the signature is lost)
  • Files where text must remain selectable

Why watermark a document copy

Landlords, employers, banks and online shops often ask for a photo of your ID. Once you send it, you lose control: it sits in inboxes and chat apps, can leak, and can be reused to open accounts or pass identity checks in your name. A watermark with the purpose and date makes the copy worthless for anything else.

How to write a good watermark

  • Say who it's for and why: “COPY for ACME Rentals — lease application”.
  • Keep the date on: it shows when the copy was made.
  • Use the repeated layout: one big mark can be cropped out; a pattern across the whole page can't.
  • Keep the important data readable: the receiver still needs to check it.

Hard to remove — by design

The mark is burned into the pixels. For PDFs, each page is rebuilt as an image, so there's no separate layer to delete. The trade-off is that PDF text stops being selectable.

Nothing is uploaded

Watermark sites that upload your ID defeat the purpose. Here everything happens in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone remove the watermark?

Not easily. It's merged into the image, repeated across the page and semi-transparent over the data. A determined person with editing skills could try to retouch a photo, but the result is visibly altered.

Will the receiver still accept the document?

Usually yes — the data stays readable. If a company refuses watermarked copies, ask them why they need an unmarked one.

Does it work on PDFs with many pages?

Yes, every page gets the mark. Large files take a few seconds per page.
