Moisture shrink
Buyers pay for grain at a standard moisture. Wetter grain carries water that will be dried off, so its weight is corrected:
Corrected weight = weight × (100 − harvest moisture) ÷ (100 − standard moisture)
Example: 1,000 kg at 18% corrected to 14% → 1,000 × 82 ÷ 86 = 953.5 kg.
Impurities
Foreign material above the buyer's tolerance is deducted as a percentage of the weight before the moisture correction.
Units
Choose 60 kg bags (Brazil's "saca"), 50 kg bags, bushels (27.22 kg for soybeans and wheat, 25.40 kg for corn) or tonnes. Revenue uses the price per the unit you chose.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my elevator's number different?
Many elevators use their own shrink tables (some add a handling factor) and charge drying fees. Use their table if you have it.
What standard moisture should I use?
In the US, 13% for soybeans and 15–15.5% for corn are common; in Brazil, 14% for both. Check your contract.
Does it work for other crops?
Yes, for any grain sold by weight at a standard moisture — just use the right bushel weight or a tonne.
